Beyond My Menopause

Symptom

Hair and skin changes

Estrogen supported your collagen and hair cycles. Both change at menopause, and both can be helped.

Also called Female pattern hair loss.

What it is

Estrogen supports collagen, the protein that keeps skin thick and springy. Skin loses roughly a third of its collagen in the five years after menopause. It gets thinner, drier, and slower to heal.

Hair changes too. Each strand grows finer, more follicles rest at once, and the part can widen. Testosterone falls less than estrogen, and that relative shift can bring new chin or lip hairs.

Not every change is menopause. Thyroid problems and low iron thin hair too. That is why a real workup comes before treatment.

What you might notice

  • Drier, itchier skin than a few years ago
  • Thinner skin that bruises or tears easily
  • A widening part or a thinner ponytail
  • More hair in the brush or the shower drain
  • New wiry hairs on the chin or upper lip
  • Brittle nails
  • Cuts and blemishes that heal slowly

How Dr. Mueller evaluates it

  1. 1

    Take the timeline

Dr. Mueller maps when the shedding started and what else changed.

  2. 2

    Rule out mimics

Thyroid and iron labs catch the common non-hormonal causes.

  3. 3

    Check medications

Some common drugs thin hair; the list gets reviewed.

  4. 4

    Start treatment

Options include minoxidil, skin barrier care, and fixing any thyroid or iron problem.

  5. 5

    Give it time

Hair responds slowly: the first regrowth shows at three to six months.

Questions people ask

Is menopause causing my hair loss?
It can. So can thyroid disease, low iron, and some medications. The history and a few labs sort it out.
Will HRT regrow my hair?
Hormone therapy is not a hair-loss treatment. Minoxidil has the strongest evidence for regrowth. The two can be used together.
Why is my skin suddenly so dry and itchy?
Thinner skin holds less water and makes less oil. A gentle cleanser, daily moisturizer, and sunscreen do more than any expensive cream.
Why am I growing chin hair?
Estrogen falls faster than testosterone at menopause. That shift lets a few coarse facial hairs grow. Plucking does not make it worse.
Do collagen supplements work?
The evidence is thin. Sunscreen, retinoids, and not smoking have much better proof behind them.
